On Thursday evening Mr. Morris Cohen, an old resident of West Maitland, and a member ot the wealthy and highly respected firm of David Cohen and Company, died at his residence, Koreelah House, Bourke-street. Mr. Cohen had been ailing for some little time, from bronchitis; he had a pretty sharp attack, attended once with a rather dangerous asthmatic choking spasm; but under Dr. Alcorn's treatment he was getting round nicely, and had returned to his usual business duties. On Thursday he was at the warehouse as usual, and transacting business up to nearly sundown, complaining then only of not being quite strong yet. Mr. Cohen went home, took tea with his family, and sat down afterwards to write a letter. Mrs Cohen had left the room for a little while and returning, found Mr. Cohen suffering from another of the sharp asthmatic spasms; she hurried away to get a mustard plaster for him, but returning in less than five minutes was barely in time to witness her husband's death. During a long life in Maitland, Mr. Cohen was known chiefly as an active and careful man of business, seldom taking any prominent part in public matters. His purse was ever open to the calls of charity, however, and the share he has had in works of benevolence, both in the way of money help and in the way of suggestion, was very considerable. Mr. Cohen leaves a widow and nine children, we believe. He was about fifty-two years of age. There are still we think five brothers left of the Cohen family, originally consisting of nine brothers-it was stated at the funeral. The funeral took place yesterday (Friday) afternoon, the following day being the Jewish Sabbath. It was very numerously attended, and numberless sorrowful regrets were expressed at so sudden a termination of the life of a good and conscientious man.
