Esther Marks (1835–1877)

The sad accident which occurred at St Kilda during the gale on Sunday morning, by which Mrs. Esther Marks and her nephew, Julien Emmanuel Jacobs, met with instant death, formed the subject of a coronial inquiry by Dr. Youl on Monday. The inquest was held at the scene of the disaater, and the jury, having been sworn, proceeded to view the premises. The room in which Mrs. Marks and the boy were sleeping in was a small one at the rear of the house, and the chimney which was overturned, was a massive pile of brick and cement; sixteen feet in height, with a very heavy ornament top. It appeared to have struck the roof in one piece, and, carrying with it the whole of the slates and timber, divided into two pieces, one remaining on the brink of the opening, and the other falling upon the sleeping occupants of the bed beneath. The ruins presented a most deplorable appearance. The whole facts of the very mournful case were carefully inquired into, and the jury, after a short deliberation, were unanimous of opinion that no evidence of neglect had come before them, and returned a verdict to the effect that deceased, Esther Marks and Julien Emmanuel Jacobs, were accidentally killed by the fall of a chimney.
