Mr. Robert Allen Hill, formerly of Buttabone Station, near Warren, died at his home in Sydney, Tillingstone, Ocean-street, Woollahra, on Wednesday, aged 80 years. Mr Hill was a son of Mr Richard Hill, M.L.C., who was a brother-in-law of William Charles Wentworth.
Mr R. A. Hill was born in the old-fashioned cottage-like house which stood for so long close to the Australian Club, in Bent-street. The cottage was demolished a few years ago. The site is now a garage. He went to school in Sydney. Before going to manage Buttabone, which belonged to his father, and which had been purchased from Wentworth, he had managed Mooki Springs Station, near Quirindi, for his late brother, Mr George Hill, who was the owner of a famous "string" of racehorses. Thence, about 1876, he went to take charge of Buttabone for his father, on whose death he carried on the management for the benefit of the estate.
While at Buttabone, Mr Hill effected numerous improvements, not only to the property, but to the stock. He was a firm believer in "blood," and at local shows, as well as the show of the Royal Agricultural Society in Sydney, the products of Buttabone were regarded as being among the best that Australia could produce.
Mr Hill was an excellent shot, both "in the field" and "at the traps," winning trophy after trophy with almost unfailing regularity. With the exception of his brother, Fitz, whose home is in Sydney, he was the oldest member of the New South Wales Gun Club.
Mr Hill was the last but one of a family of 10 sons and a daughter. He leaves a wife and a family of four. Mrs Hill was a daughter of Edward Flood, of Quambone, and a grand-daughter of a former Mayor of Sydney. Of his family, two sons and a daughter served in the Great War. One daughter remained at home with her mother. Mother and daughter did notable work for the Red Cross.
The funeral took place yesterday at the Waverley Cemetery.
