Joseph Small (1841–1921)

An old identity in the person of Mr. Joseph Small passed away at his residence on Thursday, the 20th inst, at the ripe old age of 81 years. He had been failing in health for many months but up to the time of his death retained his faculties in a remarkable manner being able to walk about with the aid of a stick up to within a week of his decease. He was a very interesting old gentleman and remembered quite clearly incidents that happened during the reign of the bushrangers (Ben Hall and his gang) and never tired relating his experiences in the bush about that time. Some idea of his popularity can be gathered from the length of the cortege which followed his remains to their last resting place in the Church of England Cemetery Carlingford, on Saturday afternoon, the 22nd.
