'Tireless church worker' dies at 76.
Former Registrar and secretary of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane Mr Roland St John, MBE, has died aged 76.
Mr St John (pictured) has been described as one of Australia’s leading laymen.
He featured in the Who’s Who in Australia and notable Australians and received an MBE for his untiring efforts in church and community spheres.
He earned the admiration of committed churchmen for his tremendous ability, energy and initiative.
His wife, Marjorie, said he was a tireless worker for the church and although he didn’t have much spare time he was still a dedicated family man.
Among his positions were Registrar and secretary of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane from 1946-74, secretary of the Southport School Council and Brisbane Church of England Grammar School Council 1947-74, member of the National Council of Independent Schools of Australia 1970-73, member of the standing committee of General Synod of Church of England in Australia 1960-74, member of the Anglican Consultative Council of whole of Anglican Communion 1970-73, secretary of the District Nursing Association of Brisbane 1966-74, 2nd AIF 1941-46, Lieutenant, Captain CMP 1955-65, Bank of New South Wales 1932-46.
Mr St John had lived in Toowoomba for the past 10 years.
A eucharist service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church, Arthur Street, at 11a.m. on Monday.
