from Australian Jewish Historical Society Journal
The death of Miss Carrie Moss occurred on December 28th, 1944, at her home at Gordon. Miss Moss had been in indifferent health for some years.
She was the youngest of the family of Mr. Lewis Moss, who conducted a pianoforte and music warehouse at 5 Hunter Street, Sydney, where she was born on December 28th, 1855. Had she lived another day she would have attained the age of 89 years.
For many years Miss Moss was a member of the Choir of the Great Synagogue, of which her brother, Mr. Sydney Moss, L.C.M., was, at the time, the Choirmaster.
She was a sister of Mrs. Herman (Rachel) Ahronson, whose son is a member of the Committee of this Society; and of Mrs. Isabella Lazarus, after whom the "Home for Jewish Children" erected at Hunter's Hill was named.
For about twenty years Miss Moss had resided in England and Europe. She was an accomplished linguist, and also a keen philatelist.
Our late member contributed substantial donations to various Sydney charitable institutions, both Jewish and non-sectarian, and, by her will, others will also materially benefit.
Miss Moss, who was a great lover of music, has bequeathed to the University of Sydney the sum of £10,000 towards the establishment of a Chair of Music, as well as her music and extensive library.
