Arthur Knight Wallace (1879–1952)

After a long illness, one of South Melbourne's best known citizens, Mr. Arthur Knight Wallace, of 68 Barrett Street, Albert Park, died last week and was cremated at Springvale.

A veteran of the South African war, Mr. Wallace represented Beaconsfield Ward in the South Melbourne City Council between 1928 and 1937 and was Mayor in 1933-34.

He also held the Albert Park seat in the Legislative Assembly from 1920 until 1927.

Mr. Wallace was an outstanding bowler and was a member of Albert Park Bowling Club.

Among many other public services he will also be remembered as a member of South Melbourne Technical School committee.

Prior to the departure of the cortege, which was private, for Springvale Crematorium, the service at McKenzie's funeral parlours, was attended by the Mayor of South Melbourne (Cr. G. F. Dwyer) and Town Clerk (Mr. H. Alexander).

Mr. Wallace whose son died from scrub typhus while serving in the Army in New Guinea during World War II is survived by a widow, Mrs. A. K. Wallace; J.P., of Albert Park, and daughter, Mrs. J. D. Quinn, of Koo-Wee-Rup North.

At the meeting of the South Melbourne Council on Wednesday night, tributes were paid to the memory of ex-Cr. Arthur Knight Wallace.

He was Chairman of the Public Works Committee in 1932-1933 and the Legislative Committee in 1935-1936, and during his nine years as Councillor gave excellent service to the municipality. The Council's sympathy had been forwarded to the bereaved family.

As a mark of respect, Councillors rose and observed a minute's silence.
