Sir John Madden has received the following telegram from Sir A. Milner, dated 6th January—"Please inform Thomas Skene, Broughton, East St. Kilda, that his son, Lieutenant William Skene, Kitchener's Horse, was killed, Nootgedacht, 13th December."
Lieutenant Skene, who has been killed in action in South Africa, is a member of a well-known Victorian family. His father is Mr Thomas Skene, a landholder of Stawell, and prominent member of the Council of the Royal Agricultural Society. His uncle, Captain David Skene, succeeded Captain (now Lieutenant-Colonel) Reay in command of the H Company of Mounted Rifles, headquarters Hamilton.
