Death has deprived us of one of our early Tasmanians, Mr. John Newby, who expired at his late residence, Oatlands, on Thursday morning, 23rd instant. Mr. John Newby was born in the year 1817, and was the only son of the late Mr. Thomas Newby, barrister-at-law, who arrived in this colony with Governor Collins, and was Provost-Marshal during that gentleman's tenure of office. Mr. John Newby resided in the district of Oatlands the principal portion of his life. He was much respected for his honesty, industry, and independence of character. He took a prominent part in elections, both parliamentary and municipal, and candidates for those honours invariably considered themselves safe if able to secure his support. Mr. Newby was very quick at discerning character, and any person whom he considered worthy never solicited a kindness from him in vain. He leaves an only daughter, married to Mr. J. G. Stansfield, of Oatlands.
