Mr. Arthur Laurence Newberry, Federal secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners of Australia, died at his residence, Evaline-street, Campsie, on Saturday norning, and the remains were cremated at Rookwood yesterday. Mr. Newberry was a member of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners for 35 or 40 years, and acted as secretary for about nine years before the amalgamation of the society with the Progressive Society of Carpenters. He then took up the secretaryship of the Federal body.
Mr. Newberry, who was 66 years of age, is survived by two sons and a daughter; his wife died about five or six years ago.
Among the sympathisers at the funeral were a large number of members of the society and officials of other unions.
