It is with considerable regret we record the death, at Blayney, of Mr. Walton Frederick McCarthy, formerly of Grenfell.
The late gentleman had not been enjoying the best of health for some considerable time, and had been staying off and on with his son Allan at Blayney where, on 23rd December, he succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 73 years.
A few years ago the late Mr. McCarthy suffered a double bereavement, his daughter Kathleen (Mrs. N. Butchart) and then his wife passing away within a few months of one another, from which great shock he did not recover.
During his latter years at Grenfell Mr, McCarthy was not as active in the town's doings as in the earlier years, when his name figured largely in many efforts for the welfare of Grenfell and district, and the concert platform knew his ability on many an occasion. No one knew this district as perhaps he did, and by steady application to his business he gradually prospered.
Mr. McCarthy was one of the band of Grenfell pilgrims to make the Kimberley trip at the time of the gold rush, the other members of the first contingent being: Alex. Meldrum, Bob Meldrum, D. Perry, Jim McFarland, Charlie Lee.
The second contingent comprised: G. Dane, W. Filby, J. McLachlan, Joe Napier, senr., Joe Napier, junr., Andrew Dein, Jas. Kerr, E. Mitton, Tom Kirkpatrick, Tom Dodd, Jack Dodd, Jack Hamilton, M. S. Williams, William Paice.
The late Mr. McCarthy was twice married, the sons of the first marriage surviving being Messrs. Alfred and Fred. McCarthy, the children of the second marriage being Mrs. Perdriau (Manly), Mrs. Irwin (Manly), Misses Eileen, Phyllis and Joan McCarthy and Mr. Allen McCarthy. Charlie was killed at the war.
To those who mourn the loss of a good father we extend our deepest sympathy.
