Gilbert Franklin Major (1855–1916)

The death occurred with alarming suddenness on Saturday morning of Mr. Gilbert Franklin Major, formerly manager of the London Bank of Australia at Northcote. He retired from the bank early this year on a pension, and had for some little time been doing temporary work at the Commomwealth Treasury. On Saturday morning, while discussing some business with a senior clerk, Mr. Major suddenly collapsed and died. He had been suffering from heart trouble. Mr. Major, who was a noted footballer in his youth, was educated at the Melbourne Grammar School. He took an active part in local affairs at Northcote, and was a vice-president of the local cricket club and its delegate on the Victorian Cricket Association from the time the club joined the association until a few months ago. He had also been connected with the Australian Natives' Association, and was a prominent Freemason. He leaves a widow and two sons.
