David Lloyd Jones, the managing director of David Jones Limited, died suddenly in St. Luke's Hospital to-night after a brief illness.
Mr. Jones, who was 30, is survived by his wife Mrs. Lloyd Jones and three children.
He was admitted to hospital more than four weeks ago and doctors said his condition had deteriorated each day.
Mr. Jones succeeded the late Sir Leslie Morshead as chairman of directors in 1960.
He later became managing director following the death of his father, Sir Charles Lloyd Jones.
At the age of 23 he was appointed a director, and four years later was made co-managing director with Mr. J. E. Rankin.
Within a year he was acting chairman of the board.
Mr. Rankin said to-night: Australia is poorer for the loss of Mr. Jones.
"Few achieve his eminence at such an early age," he added.
Mrs. Lloyd Jones is expecting her fourth child next month.
During Mr. Jones' two years as managing director, two new stores were bought a Wollongong and on the North Coast.
He was hailed as Australia's most successful young businessman.
He was in charge of a firm which employs more than 8,000, and has an annual turn-over of nearly £39 million.
A spokesman for the family said to-night funeral arrangements would be made to-morrow.
A service will probably be held at St. Mark's Church, Darling Point.
