The death has occurred of Mr Thomas Llewellyn Jones, one of Brisbane's best known commercial and yachting personalities.
Mr Jones, for many years associated with J. C. Hutton Pty. Ltd. left that firm to found Foggit Jones Pty. Ltd., which later merged with Huttons to become United Provisions Ltd., with ramifications throughout Australia. Mr Jones was chairman of directors of the firm.
He was born in Wellington, Montgomeryshire, Wales, in 1872, and came to Brisbane with his parents as a lad.
Mr Jones, who took a keen interest in Parliamentary affairs, successfully stood for Oxley in 1915, having the honour of defeating the then Premier, the late Mr Digby F. Denham.
Subsequently Mr Jones left the Assembly to become a member of the Legislative Council, remaining there until its abolition. Mr Jones was a member of the University Senate, chairman of the Brisbane and South Coast Hospitals Board and chairman of directors of the crematorium and held many offices of the Royal Queensland Yacht Club, including that of Commodore. His restricted yachts on several occasions represented Queensland in the inter-State contest for the Forster Cup.
