Private Herbert Heagney (killed in action).
News received last week brought further sadness to Richmond, when another of St. Ignatius' boys, Private 'Bert' Heagney, was reported killed in action. The deceased, who was married to Miss A. A. McKenna of Carlton prior to leaving for Egypt, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Heagney of Mason-street, Hawthorn (late of Richmond), and a brother of Muriel and Reg (now at Seymour). Of a genial disposition, he will be greatly missed from the Catholic Club. An all-round athlete, he was well known in Catholic and Irish circles. As a boxer, under Joe Stokesbury, at St. Ignatius', he was one of the best, and as a Four Tee Club member, he was the winner of swimming, running and other trophies. In football circles he was well known, giving a hand at times to the St. Ignatius', Richmond District and Beverley teams. In 1910, while on a visit to Queensland, he was a player of the Queensland representative carnival team. As a cricketer, he played with the St. Ignatius' and Richmond I.N.F. teams. A few years ago he was one of the young hurling enthusiasts of Richmond. He was 27 years of age, and was educated at St. Ignatius' School. On leaving he worked at Whybrow's boot factory, where he was employed up to the time of enlisting. He was a grand clubmate, and members of the club and all friends express their deepest sympathy with his wife, mother, father, brother and sister. The Richmond Catholic Club Roll of Honour has now been increased by the following who have enlisted: Les Phillips, Jim Naughton, W. Bloxham, J. Macdonald, Reg Heagney and J. Sheehan.
