Mary Daisy Cumming (1879–1932)

The death ocurred in Melbourne on Sunday evening of Mrs. Mary Daisy Cumming of Jellalabad, Darlington. Deceased, who had been in failing health for some eighteen months, was one of the foremost figures of the Darlington district and was beloved by all classes of the community. Born at Warrnambool, she was Miss Mary Daisy Anderson prior to her marriage with Mr. Gerald Cumming, and quickly became a well known figure in and around Darlington. A charming hostess, the deceased was renowned for her hospital visits and her home was always open to the district. Her work in charities was keen and varied, every worthy instution receiving her support and the benefit of her many talents. The Presbyterian Church at that centre had a warm spot in her heart, and she was a keen supporter of it both financially and by her work. She was the secretary of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union and was connected with all other church organisations in the district as well as in similar church organisations in the city. She was also keenly interested in the welfare of the State School and its pupils, giving prizes year after year for various subjects. President of the Darlington branch of the Australian Women's National League she guided the destiny of that organisation with tact and efficiency, and she also stimulated the progress of the Society for the Prosecution of Cruelty to Animals. A keen and effective organiser, she did consistently good work for many worthy organisations by arranging fetes and garden parties at Jellalabad to assit their funds. The whole of the Darlington district will mourn with Mr. Cumming and the family of two sons and two daughters in their great loss.

The funeral is appointed to leave Jellalabad this afternoon at the termination of a short service at the home at 1 o'clock, and the remains will be placed in the Darlington Cemetery. Messrs. Collie and Brennan have charge of the funeral arrangements.
