Mr. Alfred Percival Bedford, formerly manager of the Permanent Trustee Company of New South Wales, died late yesterday afternoon, aged 84 years.
Mr. Bedford was born in Hobart on April 28, 1848. In his early youth he came to Sydney, and completed his education at the Sydney Grammar School. He began his commercial career as a clerk with McDonald, Smith, and Co. in 1864. He was appointed manager of the American mail service for Gilchrist, Watt, and Co., Sydney, in 1876, and five years later became manager of William Sloane and Co.'s agency. Mr. Bedford was appointed manager of the Permanent Trustee Company of New South Wales in 1887, and held that position for 35 years. Upon his retirement from the company's service he was appointed honorary director.
In his younger days Mr. Bedford was a prominent athlete, and in later years took a keen interest in yachting, golf, and bowls. He was a member of the Union Club, the Pioneers' Club, the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, and the Royal Sydney Golf Club.
Mr. Bedford married Miss Agnes Victoria Stephen, daughter of Sir Alfred Stephen, who predeceased him, and he is survived by three daughters.
The funeral will take place this afternoon. There will be a service at St Jude's, Randwick, commencing at 2 p.m., and the interment will take place later in St. Jude's churchyard.
