Mr Arthur Sydney Baillieu, governing director of Baillieu Allard Pty Ltd, died on Sunday night. For many years he had been a leading figure in the business life of Melbourne and one of the city's foremost workers in the interests of charity.

Mr Baillieu, seventh son of the late Mr J. G. Baillieu, was born at Queenscliff 71 years ago, and educated at Geelong College. Besides his association with the firm which bore his name, he had many business interests, and was director of the Commercial Bank of Australia Ltd, Bay Steamers Ltd, and many other companies. In 1920 he was awarded the OBE for services associated with the repatriation of the First AIF. He founded Melbourne Hospital Birthday League, which has raised nearly £50,000, and was president of the hospital from 1935 to 1937 after holding office as vice president for several years.

While visiting Great Britain, Europe, and USA in 1936, he studied hospital services, and on his return to Australia submitted a report on hospital buildings and appointments for use in connection with the building of Royal Melbourne and other hospitals in Australia. He was a foundation member of the Lord Mayor's Fund and the Hospitals Benefit Association, and vice-president of the Royal Humane Society. He was also actively associated with freemasonry. He was a member of the Savage Club for many years. He is survived by 2 sons—Mr Darren Baillieu, of Lilydale, and Maj Everard Baillieu, AIF—and one daughter, Mrs John Reed, of Heidelberg.
