Ada Mary à Beckett (1872–1948)

Mrs Ada Mary a'Beckett, 76, who died at her residence in Lansdowne st, East St Kilda, late on Thursday night, was a founder of the Free Kindergarten Union, and served it for 40 years. A pioneer of the Kindergarten Training College in Victoria, she was also president of the Australian Association for Pre-school Child Development.

Mrs a'Beckett was a daughter of the late Rev H. J. Lambert, of Norwood, S.A. She took the degree of M.Sc. at Melbourne University, and in 1901 was the first woman appointed to a lectureship by the Council of the University. She was awarded, the CBE in 1935.

She is survived by three sons.

As a mark of respect the offices of the Free Kindergarten Union, in Collins st, will be closed on Monday. The funeral will leave St George's Presbyterian Church. Chapel st, for Springvale on Monday, after a service at 10.15am. A. A. Sleight Pty Ltd are in charge of arrangements.
