Thomas Gatenby, n.d.

The death took place on 2nd August of Mr. Thomas Gatenby, of "Pisa," Tasmania, from heart failure, and his demise has removed another well-known and highly-respected member of one of the oldest families of pastoral pioneers in the Island State. He was a son of the late Mr. John Gatenby, and was born on the Coburg Estate, on the Macquarie River, in 1848. He was educated at Horton College, and Campbell Town Grammar School. After leaving school he was brought up to pastoral pursuits, and on the death of his father, came into possession of the Pisa Estate, in the Cressy district. He was closely associated with Merino breeding in the early days, and many of his sheep were sold at high figures. Of late, however, he had relinquished Merino studbreeding for the crossbreds. The late Mr. Gatenby was a prominent sportsman of the State all his life, and for a number of years was a member and a committeeman of the Tasmanian Turf Club. He owned a number of racehorses, including Bribery (the greatest fencer of his time). During life he took a great interest in local public affairs. In 1888 he married Katherine, third daughter of the late Mr. Arthur O'Connor, of "Connorville."
