George Wilson, n.d.

from Pastoral Review, 16 July 1923

My dear old friend Mr. George Paterson Wilson, of Big Springs, Wagga, N.S.W., passed away on Sunday, the first of the month, at the ripe age of 83 years.

The late Mr. Wilson was born at Renton, on the banks of Leven Water, Scotland, in 1840. He came out to Geelong in 1858, in the sailing ship Tasmania, and settled near Ballarat. Subsequently he took over the management of Wonga Lake Station, where he remained for eighteen months. On relinquishing the management of this estate Mr. Wilson went to the gold diggings in New Zealand, and later was one of the first to settle at Lake Wakatipu. On leaving New Zealand he returned to Geelong, and joined the firm of Messrs. Wilson and Crosby, remaining with them until he first went to Big Springs in 1865 in partnership with Mr. George Wilson. The partners held the station till 1872, when Mr. G. P. Wilson retired, selling out to his partner. He then went to England, where he spent three years. On his return he bought Pomingalarna Station from Dr. Morrison, of Scotch College, Melbourne. After holding that property for some years, he sold out to Messrs. Mackay and Copland. His old partner, Mr. George Wilson, then induced him again to take over Big Springs; this he did in 1886.

The late Mr. Wilson married in 1870 Miss Fanny Lindsay, daughter of the late Captain S. J. Lindsay, of Glencoe Station, near Mount Gambier, S.A. He left six sons and one daughter, who is now Mrs. H. E. Bullivant, of Gillenbah, near Narrandera.

Mr. Wilson was past president of the Murrumbidgee Pastoral and Agricultural Association, patron of the Wagga Amateur Picnic Race Club, and one of the oldest members of the Turf Club. He was also one of the first members of the Kyamba Shire Council, and senior magistrate of the Wagga district. He was an enthusiastic bowler, and president of the St. Kilda Bowling Club, Melbourne. He was a great and kindly host and a dear friend to many.
