Mary Ann Williams (1857–1942)

Mrs. Mary Ann Williams, a very old and highly respected resident of the Young district, died at the Young District Hospital on Thursday night last at the age of 85 years. Born at Mudgee, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Rowland Ashton, going to Young to reside when only a child. She was one of the pioneering women of the district, and the news of her death was received with deep regret. She is survived by six sons, Victor (Goulburn), John (Crookwell), Herbert (Kingsvale), Rowland (Young), Frederick (Albury), and Leo (Young), and four daughters. In addition there are 56 grand-children and 69 great grandchildren surviving. She was first married at the age of 16 years to Mr. Thomas Anderson, who pre-deceased her many years ago. There were two children of the marriage, one being Mrs. A. Harris, of Coolamon, while a son died at infancy. At the age of 19 years she married Edward Williams, who pre-deceased her in 1911. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon, leaving St. John's Church for interment in the Wombat Cemetery.
