Frederick Wheeler (?–1892)

Frederick Wheeler, a painter, committed suicide today. He asked his wife shortly before 1 o'clock for the key of the cowshed, and having received it he entered the shed. About ten minutes afterwards his wife discovered the door of the shed fastened, and saw her husband hanging from the roof. She at once went to a friend named William Shanasy, five or six chains away, and told him of the occurrence. Shanasy went back with her, and saw Wheeler hanging. He got on a horse, and rode half a mile to Dr. Powell. The doctor got into a cab and reached Wheeler as quickly as possible and cut him down, but the man was then quite dead. He had suspended himself by a piece of clothesline to a rafter of the shed, and hung with his feet touching the floor. In the shed he had written in chalk, 'Good-by, Pollie.' Deceased had been drinking, and was troubled about money matters. An inquest will be held tomorrow.
