from Labor Call
We regret t0 announce the death of Mrs. Fred [Alice Ann] Riley, wife of the secretary of the Manufacturing Grocers' Union. It will be remembered that Mr. Riley was unable to attend the A.L.P. state conference because his wife was stricken with her fatal illness at that period.
For the past 10 years Mrs. Riley was a tireless worker for the people of Fitzroy and many will miss her kindness and generosity.
All her life, Mrs. Riley was associated with the Labor, movement.
The late Mrs. Riley was a J.P and a special magistrate of the Children's Court. She was a former president of the Women's Organising Committee and a board member of the Emily McPherson College of Domestic Economy
Before the last war she was secretary of the women's committee of the Victorian Socialist Party, and was the first secretary of the Women's Anti-Conscription Committee in 1916-17. She was secretary of the women's committee of the Melbourne wharf laborers in the 1919 strike, when £10,000 was raised for the women and children. She was a life-long friend of the British workers' champion, Tom Mann.
Besides Mr. Riley four children are left to mourn her loss. They are Will and Rob (sons), Alice (Mrs. A. E Davies) and Ivy (Mrs. J. M. Fleming).
Mr. George Large, secretary of the Operative Bakers' Union and Mr. Wally Large, hairdresser of Carlton for many years, are brothers.
The funeral left the home of daughter, Mrs. Davies, at Port Melbourne, on Wednesday, and the burial was made in the Coburg Cemetery.
