Cornelius (Con) Wallace (1881–1921)

Mr. Con. Wallace, ex-member for West Sydney, died yesterday at his residence at Guildford. He had been ill only for a few days. Mr. Wallace gained the Labour selection for West Sydney after the expulsion of Mr. W. M. Hughes (Prime Minister) from the Labour party, and ultimately entered the Federal Parliament. At the last Federal elections he resigned from the West Sydney selection ballot in favour of the late Mr. T. J. Ryan. Mr. Con. Wallace then accepted a position under the Queensland Navigation Department, but resigned during the early part of this year, contending that the salary paid to him was not sufficient to cope with the increase in the cost of living. It was only recently that he was again a candidate for the West Sydney vacancy in the Federal Parliament. He unsuccessfully contested the A.L.P. selection ballot, which resulted in Alderman William Lambert being elected to contest the by-election. Before entering the Federal Parliament Mr. Wallace was an organiser of the Federated Seamen's Union.
