There are some few in this colony to whom the name of James Upton is dear, and by whom the announcement of his death will be tenderly felt. He expired on Monday, September, 22nd, at his house, Brunswick Street, Blackfriars. He was perhaps one of the most useful pastors of his day: his preaching was plain, simple and evangelical; and was blessed to the conversion of hundreds. Though a strict Baptist, his weight of character was such as to ensure the affectionate recognition of all parties. While we remember that there is none good but one, "That is God," yet in a subordinate sense the phrase of "good Mr. Upton," was often applied to him. One instance of his tenderness and pastoral vigilance is worthy of notice. He did not forget the member of his Church emigrating to this colony,—no, nor even their children born here, for he was in the habit of sending them his exhortations and encouragements in kind and affectionate epistles.—From a Correspondent.
