The friends of Mr. James Swales, of Woodlands, Uralla, N.S.W., will be sorry to hear of his death at Armidale, on 13th March.
Born at Rocky River, near Uralla, in 1860, he was a son of the late James Swales, the then owner of Woodlands Station. He was educated at the Armidale Public School, the only school in Armidale at that time. At about the age of 25 he took over the management of his father's property, and acquired adjoining blocks for himself.
Mr. Swales sold his Uralla property in 1906 and purchased Newinga Station, near Goondiwindi, in Queensland. However, about three years later he disposed of Newinga and purchased the whole of Woodlands, where he resided until his death. In partnership with Messrs. G. Blomfield and F. N. Richardson he owned Ardmore Station, near Cloncurry, for several years.
He was married in 1892 to a daughter of Mr. Cleghorn, of Methven, Uralla, and leaves a grown-up family of three daughters and one son.
