James Stuart, a Queensland pioneer and member of a very well known station-owning family, passed away, we regret to state, on the 6th of last month, following an operation. Born in 1853 in County Antrim, Ireland, he came to Australia with his brother Henry in the sailing ship Renown in the year 1874, the voyage taking 97 days.
The two brothers gained colonial experience with the late Sir Samuel McCaughey at Coonong, and then purchased Emmett Downs; near Blackall, Queensland. Later on they acquired Rockwood and Ludgate Hill Stations in partnership with the late Sir Samuel McCaughey, and some years afterwards were joined by their brothers, Wallace and George, when Tower Hill, Barenya and Antrim were purchased, the firm then being known as Stuart Bros. and McCaughey. Some years between three and four hundred thousand sheep were shorn on these properties.
In 1910 the stations were all sold and James retired to Ireland and purchased Somerset Estate, Coleraine, Co. Londonderry, where he resided with his wife and family until his death.
