A former member of the Queensland Parliament and the Commonwealth Senate, Mr. J. C. [James Charles] Stewart, died at his home at Strathpine last Sunday. Mr. Stewart, who was 81 years of age, had been in Australia 43 years, having came from Scotland, his birthplace being Grantown-on-Spey. He first worked on the Emu Park line, and later went to the Lake's Creek meat-works. He was editor of the "Peoples' Newspaper," Rockhampton. He was returned to the Legislative Assembly for North Rockhampton in the interests of the Labour Party, and went from there to the Commonwealth Senate. He was Senator for a number of years, and was defeated at the 1917 election.
Mr. Stewart had lived at Strathpine for about six years, having previously resided for 15 years at Yeppoon. Mrs. Stewart died in Glasgow in 1927. There is one son. Mr. James C. Stewart, of Glasgow, and three daughters.
