William Smith (1849–1913)

Mr. W. Smith, who died at Hynam, in the south-east of South Australia on 30th August, was a well-known pastoralist. He was a son of the late Mr. Adam Smith., of Hynam, and was born on the estate in 1849. After completing his education at Scotch College, Melbourne, the deceased went to New South Wales as part owner of Eremeran Station. He remained there until the property was sold in 1881, and a little later went for a trip to England with his brother, Mr. J. R. Smith. A few years after has marriage the deceased became a part owner of Isis Downs, Queensland. He returned to the south-east in 1888, and had resided there until his death. In 1899 he took the management of Hynam Estate, and when the firm of Messrs. W. Smith and Co. sold the Hynam Estate to the Government for closer settlement, the homestead was allotted to the deceased. The late Mr. Smith was fond of all kinds of sport, and in the seventies was one of the leading cricketers of the district.
