Mr. Donald Russell Simpson, who died suddenly in Melbourne recently at the age of 55, was a well-known and very popular figure in grazing and stock circles in Riverina and northern Victoria. He was the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Simpson, of Yooroobla, Jerilderie, N.S.W., and was educated at Geelong Grammar School, Geelong, Vic.
When he left school the late Mr. Don Simpson worked on Yooroobla for some time and subsequently gained further experience on a property in the Swan Hill (Vic.) district. He joined the well-known stock and station firm of Edward Trenchard and Co. about 1935 as manager of the Corowa (N.S.W.) branch, and in that capacity made many friends in Riverina and Victoria. Some seven years ago he suffered a heart turn and was compelled to sever his active association with the firm although he maintained contact with his wide circle of clients and friends and gave them the benefit of his extensive experience and knowledge of stock.
Mr. Simpson took a keen interest in local public activities, including the Corowa P.A. and H. Society, the Corowa Race Club, and the Corowa Picnic Race Club, for which he acted as judge and committeeman. He was also an alderman of the old Corowa Municipal Council.
The late Mr. Don Simpson is survived by his wife and one son, Russell, as well as two sisters—Mrs. Chomley, formerly of Narrandera, N.S.W., and Mrs. G. G. Dangar, of Narrandera— and two brothers—George, of Markwood, Vic., and Norman, of Jerilderie, N.S.W.
Mr. Simpson was a part owner of Yooroobla with his brother Norman, and his son, Russell, is the fourth generation of the family to live on the property.
