Mohammed Effendi Said (?–1956)

from Sydney Morning Herald

Mohammed Said, who traced his descent from the Prophet, died at his home in Burwood yesterday, aged more than 100.

He was a wealthy and learned man who had studied at Islamic universities in Turkey and Russia.

He then taught in both countries, Fiji, and South Africa, until he was more than 50.

He left Baghdad 50 years ago and settled in Australia.

Mohammed Said spent many years visiting every state, organising Moslem communities, and instructing them in Islam.

Later he bought a property near Walgett and became a successful grazier.

He retired about 10 years ago, and lived in Gordon Street, Burwood, until his death.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter.
