Patrick Rogers (?–1912)

Patrick Rogers, n.d.

Patrick Rogers, n.d.

from Pastoralists' Review, 16 September 1912

Mr. Patrick Rogers, late of Ulamambri Station, Coonabarabran, N.S.W., who died on the 14th July last, was born near Drogheda, in Ireland. He came from an old fighting stock, and his family for many generations gave their share of sons as soldiers in the cause of their kings, many of them holding distinguished ranks. His father had been an officer in the English army, and Mr. Rogers followed the family bent. He served through a portion of the Crimean war, holding the rank of lieutenant, but was wounded during the siege of Sebastopol, and was invalided home, the war ending before his recovery. Attracted to Australia in the fifties, he soon engaged in pastoral pursuits, and acquired various properties in Riverina, N.S.W., including Yarran Vale, Kingarah, Adgintoothbung, and Forest Hill. A man of fearless personality and high character, he was well fitted for pioneering, and was universally respected in Riverina. In 1887 he left that part of the State, and purchased Ulamambri and Coonabarabran from Messrs. Shanahan and Jennings, Ulamambri being sold to Mr. M. Ingle-Browne a year or two ago. Mr. Rogers carried his upright military bearing to the last, and passed off suddenly and peacefully at the age of eighty-four years. He married Miss Ellen Ryan, of Varnham, Ireland, a niece of the late Archbishop Ryan, of Philadelphia, and left five sons—Thomas Rogers, of Ruthven, Queensland; J. P. Rogers, of Goondiwindi; W. Rogers, of Dunedoo; and P. E. and A. P. Rogers, Coonabarabran, and four daughters.
