William John Retallick (1862–1931)

Mr. William John Retallick, who died at 22 Avenue road, Highgate, was born in Cornwall, England. He came to Australia when five years of age with his parents, who settled at Moonta when his father established business as a storekeeper.

Mr. Retallick was educated at the public school in the town. After he left school he worked in Moonta Mines for several years.

About 45 years ago he went to Broken Hill, where he kept a general store. Thirty-five years later he left that district and worked at various places on the West Coast. When employed as a powder monkey in a quarry at Port Lincoln two years ago, Mr. Retallick met with an accident. Injuries sustained necessitated treatment in Adelaide Hospital for six months. About 18 months ago he returned to Moonta, where he lived in retirement.

Mr. Retallick was deeply interested in mining, and held the rights of Poona Mine at Moonta. For a time he was mayor of Broken Hill. In addition to a widow he has left a daughter — Mrs. L. Gardiner, of Sydney.
