Wilfred Joseph (Bill) Ratcliffe (1857–1930)

from Daily Advertiser

Mr. Wilfred Joseph Ratcliffe, who was an employee of the 'Evening News,' Sydney, for more than 50 years, died on Saturday at his home Evan-street, Lilyfield.

A foundation member of the New South Wales Typographical Association, Mr. Ratcliffe was one of the best-known figures in printing circles in the State. He had filled almost every office in his union, of which he had been a member of the board of management since its inception. Mr. Ratcliffe saw many changes in printing methods, and he often used to remark that the present generation of printers did not know how well off it was. A great stickler for arbitration, he worked hard and long for the interests of the union, and was highly respected by its members. A son, Mr. W. J. Ratcliffe, was Minister for Railways in the second Lang Administration, while another son, 'Andy' attained first-claes cricket honors.
