Tribune regrets to announce the death of outstanding Swansea (NSW) communist, Bill [William Leslie] Quinn. Bill Quinn was a candidate of the CPA when first elected to the Lake Macquarie Shire Council in 1944. He served three terms as a councillor.
Most of the local program advanced by the party and spear-headed by Bill Quinn has been achieved — the swimming pool, workers' club, and high school, to name only a few of Bill Quinn's "monuments".
To those communists and party supporters who knew him well, Bill Quinn was known as "the iron man", starting work at the North Wallsend colliery at 4 a.m. and often working through on community and party questions until the early hours of the morning.
For years he occupied executive positions on his party branch.
His confidence in the party and socialism never wavered, and he remained a firm supporter of the party's policies to his death.
Bill Quinn's role in public affairs was such that the Newcastle Morning Herald headlined the news item reporting his death, "'Mr. Swansea' dies aged 66."
Quinn Park, near Swansea Olympic Pool, was named in recognition of his remarkable community service.
