James Power (?–1900)

James Power, 45 years of age, a resident of Union Street, West Brunswick, died in the Melbourne Hospital yesterday from the effects of an accident on the Moonee Valley racecourse on Friday last. Power was crossing the course to look after his cows during the progress of a polo match, and failed to notice the approach of one of the players. Several of the spectators called out to warn the man of his danger, but Power evidently failed to hear them, and was run down by the pony. He was picked up insensible, and Lord Richard Neville, who witnessed the accident, rode ahead to the Melbourne Hospital to notify the medical superintendent of the man's approach. He remained there until Power arrived, and explained the circumstances under which the accident had occurred. The patient was admitted, suffering from what appeared to be slight concussion of the brain, and so trivial did his injury seem that arrangements were made for his discharge on Sunday night. He relapsed unexpectedly, however, and expired yesterday afternoon.
