The late Mr. Sydney Powell, who died at Drildool, Wee Waa, New South Wales, on 23rd April last, was born at Richmond, in the same State, in 1833, and was thus a very old colonist.
He was the only one of seven sons who took to pastoral pursuits, and after a series of ups and downs on the various goldfields of New South Wales, went on the Namoi in 1854, gaining colonial experience on Therribri, the property of the late J. Onus, his brother-in-law. Later he went into Queensland for Messrs. Onus and Town, and formed several stations for them, afterwards going out on his own on country on the Mungallala, now known as Toomoo, south of Morven. There being no sale for stock he left this and returned to the Namoi, settling near Narrabri. In 1881 he settled at Drildool, where he died. The late Mr. Powell was a true pioneer of the sort that are now fast disappearing, and the history of the family goes back to the very early days. Mr. Powell's father died at the age of eighty-nine, and was himself a native of New South Wales. It is believed that he was given a grant of 400 acres of land, where Homebush (near Sydney) now stands for some service rendered to the Crown in the early days.
The late Mr. Sydney Powell in 1860 married Jane Mary Walker, daughter of Paul Walker, of Staffordshire, England, and leaves five sons and four daughters. The sons are P. V. C. Powell, of Morella, Walgett, New South Wales; A E. Powell, Ivanhoe Downs, Morven, Queensland; L. J. Powell, Sydney; H. Powell, Drildool; and R. W. Powell, Norah Park, Charleville, Queensland.
