The death of Mr. John Philip, of Englefield, Balmoral, Victoria, removes another well-known Western District pastoralist. Mr. Philip was the third son of the late Captain Philip. He was born at Victoria Lagoon in 1854, and in 1880 was married to Miss Katherine Swan, a daughter of the late Mr. William Swan, of Konongwootong, Coleraine. He was educated at the Hamilton Academy and the Geelong College, Victoria, and after leaving school went to Miga Lake, the property of his father. In 1879 he proceeded to Ascot Heath, which he managed in conjunction with the Wanwin Estate, on behalf of Messrs. Philip Bros. He resided there until purchasing the Lower Crawford and Englefield estates in 1902, and went to reside at Englefield in 1904, having previously bought the Mooralla Estate.
The late Mr. Philip is survived by his wife and seven sons and two daughters, one son being on active service in France, and one at Salonika. A man of sterling character, the late Mr. Philip was held in high esteem by all who knew him. A photograph will appear in our next issue,
