Mr. G. S. [George Samuel] Perrin, F.L.S., the Conservator of Forests, died somewhat suddenly yesterday at Ballarat where he had gone in connection with the timber display at the Federal and Australian Exhibition. On Saturday he complained of feeling unwell, and Dr. Salmon was called in, and subsequently two other medical men. An operation was performed, but although relief was given, Mr. Perrin died three hours afterwards. The cause of death was stoppage of the bowels. The deceased came to the colonies from England 25 years ago. He was for some time a member of the literary staff of the Adelaide Advertiser. In 1880 he entered the South Australian Woods and Forests Department under the late Mr Ednie Brown, and became chief forester at Wirrabara five years later. In 1886 he was selected by the Tasmanian Government from a number of applicants to fill the position of Conservator of Forests in the island colony, and two years afterwards resigned the office on receiving a similar appointment in Victoria.
