Rochfort Charles Paynter (1856–1926)

Mr. R. C. [Rochfort Charles] Paynter, of Garfield Street, Kogarah, who died this week at Sydney Hospital, as the result of falling whilst attempting to board a tram in the city, was for many years a well-known resident of Rockdale. He took great interest in friendly society work, and was for many years secretary of the Queen's Jubilee Lodge, P.A.F.S. of A.; in fact, he was looked upon as father of the lodge. The late Mr. Paynter, who was 71 years of age at the time of his death, was also general secretary of the New South Wales Railways Permanent Way and Signalling Branch Association. He was very popular on the railway, and was always held in the highest esteem by members of the various local friendly societies. The deceased is survived by a widow and six children. The funeral took place on Tuesday, the remains of the deceased being interred in the Church of England portion of Woronora Cemetery. A large number of relatives, friends, railway officials, and lodge members were present at the grave side.
