Hew Paterson (1852–1925)

It is about fifty-five years since I first met big genial Hew Paterson at Moonbria in Riverina. Many times since then have we foregathered, and always I found him the same most lovable of men, with a heart big as was his burly frame.

He had abundant courage and big aims and a broad mind, but circumstances were too many for him, among them insufficient capital for the big undertaking he went into in Queensland. Having to give up this huge place, Boorara, broke Hew's heart, and he never got over it.

He with his two plucky sisters retired to a small holding near Holbrook, N.S.W., where he worked like a Trojan, but eventually sold the place and settled down at Harkaway, in Victoria, where, cared for by his devoted sisters, he ended his days peacefully, deeply regretted by all who knew him.
