Mr Tom Palmer Archer, who was known throughout Australia as a stock drover and station manager, died at Launceston yesterday, in his 97th year.
At one time he was in charge of Burenda station, Queensland, which carried 280,000 sheep and 6000 cattle.
He made many trips with mobs of cattle from the Gulf of Carpentaria to Melbourne and Adelaide, taking up to 8½ months for each trip.
It was claimed that he was so well known that telegrams addressed "T.P.A., Australia," would be delivered to him wherever he was living.
Mr. Archer was the oldest living old boy of the Launceston Grammar School, which he joined in 1860.
Mr. Archer was born at Evandale, Tasmania. He married Laura O'Farrell, former writer of Australian stories and poems.
