Mr. Thomas Owen died at his home, Russell-road, New Lambton, after a short illness. He was born in South Wales 83 years ago. Coming to Australia with his parents when a child he lived first at Merewether, then Minmi, and later at New Lambton, where he remained for more than 70 years.
Beginning work in the New Lambton colliery with his father when only nine years old, he was check-weighman at South Waratah Colliery for 54 years and was Secretary of his Lodge for 53 years, holding both positions unopposed until he retired five years ago. Taking a keen interest in the formation of the New Lambton municipality he was before the Local Government Act was passed, auditor for the council for many years. He was one of the oldest members of The Loyal Hamilton Lodge and Loyal Thistle Lodge of the Oddfellows' Society.
Funeral services at the home and graveside were conducted by Mr. R. Mowbray, of the Lay Methodist Church. The burial was at Sandgate cemetery. Mr Owen is survived by a widow, three sons, two daughters and six grandchildren.
