Fanny Mitchell (1860–1898)

We have to record the sad death by drowning of Fanny Mitchell, wife of Mr. George Mitchell, of Lower Portland, which took place at about 12 noon on Wednesday last. It appears that the deceased lady went to the river to carry up a bucket of water, and as she did not return for a considerable time, a search was made by the neighbours, with the result that the body was found in the river at about midnight on Wednesday.

An inquest was held by Mr. J. B. Johnston, district Coroner, on Thursday, when a verdict of accidental drowning was returned. The deceased lady was 38 years of age, and leaves a family of 10 children, the youngest being 9 weeks old. The remains were interred in the Wesleyan cemetery at Sackville Beach on Thursday, when Rev. J. Tarn conducted the burial. Mr. Chandler, of Windsor, carried out the duties of undertaker.
