Parsed away in Sydney, N.S.W., on Friday last, Com. F. E. [Francis Edmund] ("Ted") Miller at the age of 56 years. Ted was a late secretary of the New South Wales branch of the Amalgamated Road Transport Workers' Union, and was in 1928 appointed by the Lang Government as a member of the Transport Board. Upon the accession to office of the Stevens Government, "Ted" was the only one of Lang's appointees to retain his position, being later appointed as an Industrial Commissioner by the Stevens Government, which position he held till his death. As an organiser of the old Trolley, Draymen and Motor Drivers' Union, "Ted" was a consistent and staunch advocate of the Federation, and when in 1925 negotiations were going on he and the president (Alf. Birkinshaw) were sent to Melbourne to confer with representatives of the Carters and Drivers' and the Motor Transport Unions. When the Federation, under the new name was formed in January 1926 in Melbourne, by six representatives from each Union, "Ted" became one of the foundation members of the Union. A thoroughly good Unionist, a staunch Laborite, and an excellent comrade, "Ted" Miller will be sadly missed by his many friends in this State.
