Mr. William Henry Mellor, the secretary of the Perth Builders' Labourers' Society, who met with an accident while working on a building in course of erection next to the Bank of Australasia, in St. George's-terrace, on Wednesday last, succumbed to his injuries in the Perth Hospital early yesterday morning. The deceased was engaged on a scaffold and making a false step backwards fell a distance of 30ft. His spine was fractured. From the first no hope was entertained of his recovery. An inquest was opened by the City Coroner yesterday afternoon, the jury consisting of Messs K. Taylor, J. Veryard, and George Stubbs, but after the body had been viewed the enquiry was adjourned until 2.30 on the 14th inst. Mr. Darbyshire appeared on behalf of the deceased's wife. Mr. Mellor took a very prominent part in local labour matters. Besides his position as secretary of the Builders' Labourers' Society, he was a representative of that body on the Trades and Labour Council, and was also a leading light in the newly-formed Labour Church. The news of his untimely end was received with intense regret by his friends and fellow-workers. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon, when the members of the Eight Hours' Committee, the Trades and Labour Council, and the Builders' Labourers' Society, together with the attendants at the Labour Church, are requested to attend.
