Mr. Patrick McGahen, a very old resident of Singleton, died at his residence, Church-street, at the age of 82 years. He was a native of County Meath, Ireland, and came to his country about 60 years ago. He landed at Morpeth, and, with a number of his fellow-passengers, came to Archerfield, in this district where he entered the service of the late Mr. George Bowman as a carrier. He worked the road from Morpeth to Armidale for some time, and then followed station work on the Ravensworth Estate for some years. Subsequently he was engaged with contractors in clearing timber along the railway route between Singleton and Muswellbrook. During the last 30 years he resided at Church-street. The cause of death was senile decay. The late Mr. McGahen was married at Maitland (his wife being a native of Ireland), Mrs. McGahen pre-deceasing her husband by seven years. There were seven children, comprising Mr John McGahen, of Kurri Kurri; Mr. Thomas McGahen, of Singleton (at whose residence Mr. P. McGahen passed avay); Mrs. Stokes, of Sydney; Mrs. W. K. Winsor, Petersham; Mrs. Elliott, Kurri Kurri; and Misses Hannah and Ellen McGahen, of Petersham and Strathfield respectively. The funeral took place on Sunday, the remains being interred in the Roman Catholic Cemetery.
