from Westralian Worker
Word was received in Kalgoorlie on Monday of the death of Mr. M. J. [Michael Joseph] McCarthy, well known on the eastern goldfields for many years as a stalwart of the Labor movement and an active and prominent official in its activities. He was familiarly known as "Joe" McCarthy, and from the inception of the goldfields interested himself in the welfare of the industrialists, for which he was well fitted by an active interest in the Labor movement and union circles in Broken Hill, where he played a prominent part in the great strike of 1890. The late Joe McCarthy was president of the Kalgoorlie and Boulder Branch of the old federated Miners' Union, and was subsequently for a time on the management committee of the A.W.U. Mining Branch. He was president of the E.G. District Council of the A.L.P. for many years, and in that capacity took a big part in many hard-fought election campaigns. Although he failed in several attempts to secure the nomination of the Party as a Labor Candidate, he always came up smiling and carried on the good work with considerable energy and capability. His wife predeceased him in 1924, and not long after that sad occurrence in his life he migrated to the Eastern States, finally settling in Bendigo where his death occurred. Several sons and a daughter survive him and to them our deepest sympathy is extended. Joe McCarthy's old friends and comrades in these parts will deeply regret his demise.
