Mr. Joseph Marshall, senr., of Kiln-street, Portland, was sitting in front of a fire at his home on Monday when he collapsed and died. The deceased was 63 years of age.
Although he had been in ill health for some time, Mr. Marshall had been able to follow his occupation as a miner at Tyldesley colliery. He intended going to work on Monday morning, but his wife prevailed upon him to stay at home.
Mr. Marshall had lived in Portland for the past eight years, and was highly respected. He was a native of England, where he was connected with a number of industrial organisations before coming to Australia. Sincere sympathy will be extended to Mrs. Marshall and the family, the members of which are: Mrs. J. Ornston (England), Misses Cicely and Mary and Mr. Arthur Marshall ( Sydney), Miss Jennie Marshall (Portland).
Tyldesley colliery was idle as a mark of respect on Tuesday, when the funeral, which was largely attended, was held. A service was conducted by the Rev. V. Gilbert in St. Stephen's Church of England. Interment was made in the Church of England cemetery at Portland. Mr. E. Mara represented the Miners' Federation.
Messrs. John Simpkins and Son had charge of the arrangements.
